Welcome to the NEW Healthista series featuring 30 days of weight loss tips with Nutritionist Rick Hay. Discover why the moringa in your next smoothie could help you lose weight
Today’s tip is about a food known as Moringa, which some studies have found can help balance blood sugar, when taken regularly as a tea. Made from the leaves and/or seeds of a tropical tree scientifically known as Moringa oleifera Lam another study – albeit on rats found reductions in body weight amongst those that were fed powder made from mooring leaves. Other research has found that the leaves have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties too. Rick Hay suggests taking the powder as a tea or adding it to smoothies (see below).

Rick Hay says: ‘Moringa is something that you’ve probably come across if you’ve been researching weight loss ingredients. It contains chlorogenic acid and what that does is it tends to work through the liver, helping to stimulate liver function which is really important for weight loss. This also helps to balance blood sugar levels, which is important because if this isn’t balanced you will end up with cravings going up snacking on sugary substances, on foods you shouldn’t be having, impacting negatively on your weight loss goals. Moringa can be taken as you would a tea, you put a teaspoon or two in some water, or you can have it in a juice or a smoothie. It’s deep green colour is going to help with digestion and anything that stimulates digestion helps us to stimulate fat loss. It is very important to have good functioning digestion if you want to achieve optimum weight loss.’
